Spiral Frog + Universal Music Catalogue = Lead Balloon?

Hype’s a bumping these days about the December debut of Spiral Frog. In case you’re out of the know, “SpiralFrog is a new online music destination, offering ad-supported legal downloads of audio and video content licensed from the catalogs of the world’s major and independent record labels.” So you watch an ad and then get to legally download media without the fear of the RIAA suing your criminal butt.

Universal walked on board and is now offering their entire 3 million plus music catalogue for legal download via Spiral Frog. Eminem, Bon Jovi, Jay-Z, Ashlee Simpson and Rammstein can be yours just like that. Well, for six months at least. Then you gotta watch another ad and re-download your tunes.

Spiral Frog is way jazzed, sending out press releases left and right. Yup, nearly all of that junk is coming directly from the Frog’s mouth. As for Universal? It doesn’t really give a crap whether you use Spiral Frog or not. In fact, an inside and pertinent source from Universal ran the numbers, tested the markets and expects Spiral Frog to be a real flop. What’s up with that, Universal? Money. They’ve already gotten shitloads of it from the Frog. And that’s the bottom line. Get it on the front end.
