It’s Hard Out Here for a Guac

Today Mamasita and I went to Carpinteria’s annual Avocado Festival which was even more festive than I remember. I particularly enjoy avoiding the 101-UCSB traffic while still experiencing in the small town beach vibe. Balmy, sunny and blue, blue, blue skies… ’twas a ripe day for avocadoing indeed!

Riding an old-fashioned trolley welded atop a bus a few blocks into town, we hopped off on the main drag and hit up the agricultural tent for our free swag (cool avo magnets, posters and recipes!). We perused the grammar school entries in the “Dress up an Avocado” contest which were adorable… until I espied the third place winner. Ma thought it was a cowboy but take a look at the picture and tell me what you think:

Avocado Winners

It’s totally a Bloods gang member, right? Doesn’t the red teardrop mean this avocado killed somebody? Is this the sort of symbology the Avocado Organization wants to be awarding?

But we couldn’t tarry with so much guacamole to be tasted. We bought a fresh guacamole and chips appetizer and chowed down, finishing it off with hand-squeezed lemonade. Of course the best guacamole contest tent was right next door so we had to make room in el stomach for 27 different kinds of guacamole. I liked the spinach guacamole the best. (The pear guac was a close second.)

Then we tent shopped at all the artisan booths and Mamasita freaked out that I forgot to wear sunscreen. We patronized some bambino’s drink stand, giving him $2 for his entrepreneurial spirit. We ambled down to the beach and thought about staying in the shade except that a group of dolphins decided to hang out by a buoy and entertain us land-dwellers with some acrobatic jumps and tail splashings. Mamasita thinks I should rent one of the vacant bungalows on the beach. I just might.

The day concluded with a heaping scoop of guacamole ice cream (kind of disgusting) and a “short cut” through Ojai and Fillmore (kind of beautiful).
