But About Today…

Quartzite Snack Shack

I drove and I drove and I drove some more to bear witness to an incredible convergence of seniority in the winter desert. Bienvenidos Quartzite, a vast plateau of flea market stalls bursting at the poly-vinyl seams with rocks, gems, minerals, animal tails, fossils, jewelry, crafts, crappy tools, deer toes, geodes, arrow heads, creature teeth, crystals larger than toddlers, slushies, soaps, knives, Native American goods and a sprawling array of tchotchkes.

I soaked in the extra-strength UVs and wandered among the recreational vehicular oases, eavesdropping to tales of BLM misdeeds and beagle-doting. I spent $1 on a two-foot long pine cone which I found colossal in a prehistoric, wrong yet natural way. I planned on dragging along Roxie (on loan from Elizabethtown) but, smithereens, she is in Death Valley, taking in an antique ballet at the seriously haunted hotel and searching for secrets in Darwin Falls.

  1. Speaking of the aforementioned “seriously haunted hotel,” my photos of the opera house interior cut off after only a couple of orb-FILLED shots. Almost every single one of those photos have apparently been lost to the supernatural powers-that-lurk. Other photos saved to the card after that, though, but they are of daytime desert wanderings the following day. Coincidence?
